Every journey begins in the FOYER

We are an independent, annual print magazine exploring culture and identity from the point of view of people from diaspora communities, namely those of second-generation migrants and mixed-heritage backgrounds, and third-culture individuals. We are at the forefront of stimulating and opening up dialogues about these diaspora communities and uncovering their uncharted stories and experiences.

FOYER seeks to create a tangible, centred representation and documentation of these valuable connections, voices and shared cultural experiences, and to build an evolving archive of knowledge highlighting the important, and sometimes invisible, cultural threads that connect us all.

FOYER is the beginning.

In Issue 04, we meet chef-owner Ellinor Strinnholm, connect with food content-creator Natalie Jones, get spicy with chilli-oil entrepreneur Eyan Chan, and explore the food start-up community with Suzana Orsolic. We discover how kitchen objects create connections, take time to appreciate the ambience of where we eat, rediscover forgotten recipes, examine food as botanical art, and find solace in the expat food shop. Through photo essays, we experience favourite dishes, appreciate the tastes of home, uncover how food photography shapes our experience, and the heartfelt process of decolonising our bodies. And we see how food weaves itself into cultural norms, investigate farming and cooking as a collective practice, ask ourselves 'what are recipes?', and consider how hosting opens opportunities for personal connection. Through Q&As with creatives, we unpick what food really means to us, appreciate how food holds both time and love, and how, ultimately, we are all welcome at the table.

Our pages

Like its namesake, FOYER is a place to meet and pause, a hallway leading to new places, but it can also mean a social club or home. As a tribute to all the different places a FOYER can lead, contributors are invited to react to an annual theme, presenting this through words or artwork, and how this relates to their diaspora or Third-culture experiences.

Through our pages, you can explore and be at the forefront of different and contemporary ways of thinking about culture and identity and its meaning and place in today's world.

Culture Stew by FOYER Podcast

Each episode is a guide to culture and identity through food, specifically stews, from creative and entrepreneurial individuals from diaspora communities and TCK backgrounds. Stews not only exist in various guises, names and forms but are also a wonderful metaphor for the different cultural fusions that make up who we are.
