Exploring culture through new perspectives.

Welcome to our FOYER

FOYER is an independent print magazine exploring culture, art and heritage from the point of view of people from mixed, second-generation and third culture backgrounds

These unique cultural experiences and insights are often overlooked by mainstream society and cultural outlets. FOYER seeks to create a tangible place to facilitate these valuable connections and shared cultural experiences, to build a community and archive of knowledge highlighting the important, and sometimes invisible, cultural threads that connect us all.

Our pages

Through our pages, you can explore different ways of thinking about culture and its meaning in today's world through essays, illustrations, fiction, poetry, memoirs, recipes, interviews, and photography. FOYER is playful and experimental, using a different paper stock and structure depending on the Issue’s theme.

Like its namesake, FOYER is a place to meet and pause, a hallway leading to new places, but it can also mean a social club or home. As a tribute to all the different places a FOYER can lead you to, each Issue is themed so you can explore thoughtful and borderless content that helps you learn about the world through different eyes.

Shop the Print Collection

FOYER is an archival publication of thoughts, ideas and experiences which never grow old. Through printed pages of words, colour photography and bespoke illustrations, we can touch and reread these experiences and connect with them anytime we want, and transport ourselves to other parts of the world, whether that be the Czech Republic or Colombia, and find like-minded individuals.

Issue 03:
Nature & Culture

Issue 03, we discover how a scientist connects to nature by making paper flowers, find out about olfactory art, and how a ceramic artist brings nature into her art and life. Through photo essays, we explore natural surroundings through the eyes of displaced children in south-east Turkey with film photography, study a garden in bloom, understand the street cycling culture Bikelife, and think about resource exploitation in the borderlands of Italy. By way of ingredients and recipes, we experience the Brazilian concept of ‘saudade’, appreciate the powers of seaweed pesto, drink ancestral healing blends from Colombian women, and learn how to pickle - Indian style! The theme of water takes us from swimming pools in London, finding a treasure hunter in the Philippines, to understanding water rituals in Morocco. Tips are given on how to incorporate gardening into your working day, and Q&As with chefs and artists provide insights into nature’s everyday impact on our lives and how we live today.

Issue 02:
Hearth & Home

In Issue 02, we discover Punjabi hair oiling, the intricate embroidery of Lucknow’s chikankari and connecting to Korea by wearing the Hanbok. We learn what it is like to travel on a weak passport, how to redefine your experience of home, and to consider the idea that where you are born is not always where you belong. We venture to Colombia to experience the Afro-Colombian tradition of burying a new born’s umbilical cord, and muse over how to find yourself through floristry in Prague. Through photo essays we explore bringing the texture of hearth and nature into the home. And we experience the bonding powers of a big pot of Mjaddara, and connect with three displaced Syrian women living in Kurdistan who bring a taste of home to their camp.

Issue 01:
Connect

In Issue 01, we join entrepreneur Mae Yip to investigate how her cultural heritage has influenced her business. Fictional stories compare two breakfasts side by side, an epiphany in a shoe department, and a translator officiating a wedding in two languages. Thought-provoking non-fiction essays examine culture and connection through Ghanaian fairy tales, Moroccan games and carpets, and Mexican and Filipino food memories. Powerful photo essays explore the Dutch government’s apology to Indonesians, and an emotive photo collection of important statues protected from the war in Ukraine.

Culture Stew by FOYER Podcast

Each episode is a guide to culture and identity through food, specifically stews, from creative and entrepreneurial individuals from mixed heritage, second generation and TCK backgrounds. Stews not only exist in various guises, names and forms but are also a wonderful metaphor for the different cultural fusions that make up who we are.
